A man who stabbed a policeman in Hamilton last year has pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and will be sentenced next month.
Marcus Jason Whakataka, 32, was initially charged with attempted murder, but that was dropped when he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge at the High Court in Hamilton today.
Police said Whakataka stabbed one of three officers who went to a house to investigate a protection order breach in May last year.
Whakataka escaped from the scene and the officer was taken to hospital and treated for wounds including a punctured lung.
The attack sparked a 14-hour manhunt, which ended when the accused was arrested by the armed offenders squad.
He was also convicted on a charge of breaching a protection order and has been remanded in custody.
