Man charged with murder of triplet baby

A 29-year-old man has been charged today with the murder of a two-month-old child in January.

Police launched a homicide investigation following the death of the little girl, Hinekawa Topia, after attempts to resuscitate her at Whanganui Hospital were unsuccessful.

The arrested man will appear in the Whanganui District Court this afternoon charged with murder and a number of other offences.

"A small team of staff have worked tirelessly on the inquiry and recently medical information came to hand that has ultimately resulted in this arrest," Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Forlong said.

Police said they would not comment further about what led to the arrest or release details about the man charged.

Hinekawa was one of triplets, and her siblings have been placed in the care of Child Youth and Family, police said.

She had been driven to hospital by her parents shortly before 1pm on January 12.

Hinekawa was not breathing and attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

Police were contacted by the hospital about 1.20pm.

A post-mortem examination concluded Hinekawa suffered a head injury which was considered non-accidental.

At the height of the inquiry up to 20 staff were working on the case.
