Man discovered hours after accident

A man was found 40 metres down a bank this morning, hours after his car crashed in eastern Bay of Plenty.

The accident happened around 7.30pm yesterday, but was discovered about 9am today by road workers around the Waioeka Gorge, near Opotiki, TrustPower TECT rescue helicopter spokesman Liam Brettkelly said.

Road workers decided to investigate after seeing wheel tracks leaving the road and found the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, down a bank.

Mr Brettkelly said the man had flown to Auckland from Dubai and was driving to Gisborne when the accident happened.

The rescue helicopter took him to Whakatane hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
