Man feared drowned in Waikato River

A young man is feared drowned after he and a friend tried to cross the Waikato River in Hamilton last night.

The 22-year-old man and his friend were attempted to swim across the river near Jellicoe Drive when he disappeared shortly before 9pm, police said.

His friend raised the alarm.

Police and Fire Service searched the river banks, and used a boat with thermal imaging equipment to search the river as far as the Fairfield Bridge without success.

The search was called off for the night at 11pm.
