Man helped from burning house

A man had to be helped from his central Rotorua home after fire broke out.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to a house on Pererika St about 4pm yesterday, after reports of a fire at the property.

When The Daily Post arrived at the scene a man was being taken from the Pererika St house by two police officers. He lay down on the pavement before police and paramedics placed him into the back of an ambulance.

Cordons were briefly put in place at the intersection of King St and Pererika St.

The house is down a long driveway next to a set of shops on Pererika St. It also backs on to the Ranolf St medical centre.

A fire truck was parked in the medical centre car park and water hoses were placed over a fence into the man's property.

Several people had gathered at the scene to view proceedings. A King St resident said he knew an elderly man lived at the property.

He said there was no indication of a fire and the first he knew of the event was when police and fire crews arrived.

The man's dog was taken away by the Rotorua District Council's Animal Control team.

Police officers and firefighters at the scene would not comment to The Daily Post.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
