Man missing in bush

A search and rescue operation is under way in Manawatu for an experienced tramper missing in bush since yesterday afternoon.

The 67-year-old man had been cutting a bush track for use by local children in the Rangiwahia area about 50km northwest of Feilding.

He left his home in Cheltenham, 15km northeast of Feilding, about 8am yesterday and was reported missing after he failed to return last night.

His car was found about 10pm on the main road from where he usually walked into the bush area.

Fire officers and police began searching the track before a full search and rescue operation was launched with three teams of police and volunteers, along with a police dog, from Palmerston North.

The teams searched through the night with night vision goggles.

Police said the man had been tramping most of his life, but was not equipped for being in the area overnight.

He carried a cellphone and a personal GPS, which did not send a signal, and police had not been able to contact him.

Police said his familiarity with the area meant it was unlikely he was lost, but he could be ill or injured.

Conditions overnight were cold with heavy showers.
