Man punctures lung in nail gun accident

The man who shot himself with a nail gun in Hawke's Bay today is in serious condition in Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman said the 31-year-old man, who sustained a wound to the upper chest resulting in a punctured lung, was being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.

The incident occurred about 3pm today while the man was building on a rural property at Hatuma, near Waipukurau.

He was airlifted by the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter to hospital.

Meanwhile, a 55-year-old man who injured himself with a chainsaw in Onga Onga this morning has undergone surgery and is now in recovery.

The man suffered from a serious laceration to the face after his chainsaw kicked back.

The man was driven to Waipukurau Medical Centre by a friend, and then flown by rescue helicopter to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital.
