Navy sailor dies in scooter accident

A New Zealand Navy sailor died when he was involved in a motor scooter accident while on leave in Rarotonga early yesterday morning, the New Zealand Defence Force says.

He was Able Seaman Combat Specialist William Paratini Delamere, 22, who was serving on the offshore patrol vessel HMNZ Otago, which is currently conducting maritime patrols in the Pacific.

The NZDF said in a statement the accident occurred adjacent to the ship's berth shortly before 1am local time (NZT3am).

Personnel from the ship administered first aid and accompanies him to Rarotonga Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1.30am.

Maritime component commander Commodore John Martin said this was a sad day.

"On behalf of the entire New Zealand Defence Force, especially the Navy, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family, colleagues and friends of Able Seaman William Delamere."

"Next of kin have been informed and our priority is to provide comfort and support to the family and shipmates."

Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman also offered his sympathies.

"I wish to extend my condolences to friends and loved ones of William Delamare and also to his crewmates on the Otago.

"The tragic loss of this young life will be a big shock to all those close to William Delamare.

The NZDF would provide support to his friends and whanau.

The coroner in Rarotonga is investigating the incident.
