Two police officers who survived being shot by Napier gunman Jan Molenaar eight months ago had their first day back at work yesterday.

Senior constables Bruce Miller and Grant Diver both suffered gunshot wounds in the incident which saw their colleague Senior Constable Len Snee shot dead and a civilian who went to their aid wounded.

Mr Miller did a shift at Napier police station yesterday, and said it felt good to be back, The Dominion Post reported.

"I'm doing a few part-time duties around the station for a couple of weeks and hopefully will be back into my area at the beginning of March, if all goes well."

Dog handler Mr Diver was also back at work on light duties.

His dog, german shepherd Fi, who was feared dead after spending more than 30 hours trapped inside a police van outside Molenaar's house, had mostly been recuperating with Mr Diver, but had also begun training again.

Molenaar opened fire with a high-powered semi-automatic weapon when the two officers and Mr Snee visited his house during a routine cannabis search last May

Mr Snee died instantly. Mr Diver was shot in the left lower back and buttock. Mr Miller was shot from behind through the groin and left thigh. Molenaar died after turning the gun on himself following a three-day siege.

The wounded officers managed to crawl to safety.
