Police concerned for man missing in South Auckland

Police have fears for the safety of a 50-year-old man with the mental ability of child missing overnight in South Auckland.

Donald Wheatley left the respite house where he lived in Franklin about 12pm yesterday, Pukekohe acting Sergeant Wayne Paxton said.

Mr Wheatley had the mental ability of a 10-year-old, became anxious very easily and was required to take medication.

Due to the poor weather conditions in the area overnight police were concerned for his safety, Mr Paxton said.

Mr Wheatley had been spotted throughout the day in Hunua until 7pm but police were not able to find him despite an extensive search.

Police would begin searching again at daylight today, Mr Paxton said.

Mr Wheatley is described as Caucasian, about 1.7m tall, bald with no teeth.

He was last seen wearing a long dirty golden blond wig, green track pants, a cream jumper and black shoes.

Police asked the public to report any sightings of him.
