Police officer gets Taser shock

A Taupo policeman got a shock “like an electric fence” when he got too close to an offender being Tasered by another police officer.

The incident happened at Kinloch, on the western shores of Lake Taupo, when an intoxicated man, armed with an air pistol and a knife, threatened to harm himself.

It was thought to be the first time a police officer had been hit by a “secondary shock” from a Taser, The Dominion Post reported.

Acting Bay of Plenty police district operations manager Stu Nightingale said the injured officer was not hit directly.

"The officer was not Tasered. He got too close to one of the Taser probes and received a small jolt of electricity. It was equivalent to touching an electric fence."
