A brief police pursuit ended with a four-car smash after a stolen car hit road spikes and swerved at speed in the Auckland suburb of Avondale.
Police began pursuing a Subaru Forester about 12.25pm after a man was reported to be behaving suspiciously at a property in the suburb of Mt Roskill.
The pursuit was called off two minutes later and the police Eagle helicopter continued to track the car, which had been reported stolen from Middlemore Hospital yesterday.
The crash happened about 12.34pm after the car hit road spikes police had laid on Rosebank Rd in Avondale.
Police and witnesses at the scene said the Subaru swerved at speed and veered into the cars.
Two men in the Subaru fled on foot but were later caught and arrested.
Nobody was injured in the crash, but a member of public was bitten by a dog from a police dog unit which had been tracking the offenders.
The man was treated at Auckland Hospital and his injury was not thought to be serious.
Roesbank Rd has been closed while the police serious crash unit investigates.
