A prominent entertainer who admitted performing an indecent act towards a teenage girl was today discharged without conviction.
He was also given permanent name suppression.
Judge Eddie Paul handed down his decisions in Auckland District Court this afternoon, after hearing submissions last week.
Defence counsel Ron Mansfield, in his submissions, had sought a discharge without conviction and permanent name suppression.
A conviction and/or revealing the entertainer's identity would have an effect on the man and his career that would be disproportionate to the gravity of the offending, he said.
Police opposed a discharge without conviction, while various media organisations argued against permanent name suppression.
The defendant pleaded guilty to one count of performing an indecent act with intent to insult.
The charge arose from an early-morning incident after the entertainer left a Wellington venue.
