Jaime Callender (13) was rehearsing her school play, The Curse of the Mummy, at Mairehau High School when the Christchurch earthquake struck on Tuesday.

Yesterday, she arrived in Dunedin with her parents, Steve and Liz, and younger brother Jakob (9) as the family fled the destruction.

The children still had vivid memories of Tuesday.

"We were on stage doing our play and then the big boom boxes fell down. We ran to the door, but there was glass everywhere. It was just so scary," Jaime said yesterday.

"We were playing a game called 'Steal the hat and give it back' on the back field at school," her brother, Avondale Primary School year 6 pupil Jakob, said.

"The earth was kind of rolling. We were watching the swimming pool and the water was going backwards and forwards.

"It was quite noisy. You kind of get used to the aftershocks but, as they get bigger, you start to worry again," he said.

"Our house is a bit on different angles now. I was hoping that if there was another big aftershock it might go back to normal."

Jaime said she felt sorry for the earthquake victims and people who had lost loved ones.

"I feel real sorry for them. A house is just a house and a road is just a road. But you can't replace someone's life," she said.

"It's just like something you can't change," Jakob said.

"I want to forget it all happened and go back to how it was before. I hope that we can get it something like before."

"Mum and Dad have relaxed now we're down here. Dad said he wishes we moved back here after the first one [in September]," Jaime said.

"I kind of think the earthquake was good in a way, because it's brought people together. We sat down with Mum and Dad and played board games last night, which we've never done before.

"You don't know what you take for granted until it's gone."

The Callender family is staying with Jamie and Jacob's grandparents, Martin and Rhonda Callender, in Mosgiel until school resumes in Christchurch in about two weeks.
