Frustrated Christchurch residents are warning they will stage street protests if the Government does not reveal which quake-hit suburbs will be abandoned.
Their anger is rising as the Government has already missed its end of May target for the release of land reports and Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee has not offered a new deadline, The Press reported.
Canterbury Community Earthquake Recovery Network spokeswoman Leanne Curtis said people only wanted to know which land in quake-hit eastern suburbs would be abandoned following the February and September earthquakes.
If the information was not available by the end of June "all hell will break loose," she said.
Barry Tutt, chairman of Bexley Residents Association before the February quake, said the Government needed to front up with answers, or a least a timetable, or it would face protests.
"Winter is setting in and people's patience has expired. 'We are getting to the point where there will be protests in the street."
Mr Brownlee has asked for patience, acknowledging the frustration of residents.
"The size, scale and complexity of the issues we are facing means it will take a little more time," he said.
"While waiting must feel like forever, rushing decisions will ultimately be at the cost of property owners."
The Government needed to consult with the Earthquake Commission and insurers, so affected property owners could be given clear support and options when they were told the bad news, Mr Brownlee said.
