Quake shakes North Island

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake has rattled the central North island this afternoon.

The quake, which struck at 2.39pm, was 220km deep, and centred 20km north west of Rotorua, according to the Geonet website.

Some media reported it was felt as far away as Nelson and even Dunedin.

Rotorua police said they had not received any reports of damage.
