Red Cross has launched an emergency appeal to support communities affected by the powerful earthquake in North Canterbury and aftershocks that have been felt nationwide.

The 7.8 magnitude hit early on November 14, near Hanmer Springs, causing widespread damage in both islands.

Red Cross southern humanitarian services manager Sue Price said it was better people gave money rather than items to those affected by the quake and aftershocks, as Red Cross could ensure necessary items reached those who needed them.

Speaking to The Star this week, Ms Price said the Dunedin Red Cross' disaster welfare and support truck had been sent to Christchurch, and the driver and volunteers were ready to support residents wherever needed.

The truck could provide shelter and food for up to 150 people.

A media statement released earlier in the week said the Dunedin contingent would join other teams from as far afield as Waikato to help residents in Marlborough and Kaikoura.

Red Cross had identified water as an urgent need and would be distributing water bladders and tap stands, Ms Price said.
