Two European tourists are dead after their campervan and truck collided on State Highway 1 in Northland today.
The two vehicles crashed near Towai, 18km southeast of Kawakawa in the Bay of Islands, about 10.40am, police said.
A vehicle following the campervan was also involved in the smash.
The tourists, a man and a woman in their 30s died at the scene.
Police said their relatives were being sought.
The truck driver was not hurt and a woman and child in the third vehicle escaped with moderate injuries.
It was not known what caused the crash, police said.
Far North area commander Inspector Chris Scahill said it was "a tragic start to the holiday season".
SH1 reopened this afternoon after being cordoned off for several hours while police carried a scene examination.
