Shot officer back on duty with new dog

Christchurch shooting victim Senior Constable Bruce Lamb is back on duty with his newly-qualified narcotics dog Mylo.

The 20 month-old black Labrador is the new canine partner for Mr Lamb, who was shot and injured when officers were called to a house in Phillipstown, Christchurch, last July.

Mr Lamb and colleague Constable Mitch Alatalo were both wounded and Mr Lamb's dog Gage was shot and killed in the incident.

Gage was the 23rd police dog to be slain on duty.

Today, eight narcotics and explosives dogs graduated from the Police Dog Training Centre at Trentham.

Gage's death generated huge public support for the work of police dogs and an appeal resulted in more than $20,000 being donated to the New Zealand Police Dog Charitable Trust.

Christopher Graeme Smith has been charged with the attempted murder of the two police officers and killing police dog Gage.

His trial is set to start on May 30.

His brother, Steven Paul Smith, 31, faces drugs and firearms charges.
