A Tokoroa takeaway shop owner, who shot a burglar while trying to wrestle a gun away from him, has had a change of heart about leaving the town.
Zhuo Feng Jiang, 27, was working in his Aotea Chinese Takeaway late on April 26 when an armed man burst in and pointed a .22 rifle at Mr Jiang's cousin.
Mr Jiang grabbed the intruder's rifle and shot him in the leg.
The man fled and was arrested by police soon after. Brian Pakai, 30, Court was jailed for seven years after being convicted in Rotorua District Court of assault with intent to rob, unlawfully carrying a firearm, and commission of a crime with a firearm.
Police decided not to charge Mr Jiang for firing the rifle.
After the court hearing, Mr Jiang said he had had enough of Tokoroa and would move to a safer are.
But this week he said that while the town had been "having a bad time lately" it was no different from any other town.
"It is not a dangerous place to live."
He said he had no regrets about confronting the armed robber, and would do it again.
