Student arrested in stabbing

Police investigating the death of a 30-year-old woman whose stabbed body was found in an Auckland inner city apartment on Tuesday have arrested a 23-year-old man.

The student from the Auckland suburb of Northcote would appear in Auckland District Court tomorrow charged with Yi Ren's murder, police said tonight.

The man, who suffered a severe knife wound to a hand, was discharged from Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland this afternoon.

Yi Ren, also known as Tina, is a Chinese national from Beijing.

Her next of kin have been told and some were travelling from China to Auckland over the next few days.

A post-mortem examination on Ms Ren was completed this morning and a preliminary report showed she had suffered stab wounds.

It was up to the coroner to determine her cause of death, police said.

A scene examination by Auckland police at the Winchester St, Newton, apartment where Ms Ren was believed to have been killed was continuing and expected to be completed tomorrow afternoon.
