Student who stabbed teacher remanded for two weeks

A student who has admitted stabbing his teacher at a West Auckland secondary school has been remanded for two weeks until his next appearance on May 28.

Tae Won Chung, 17, a South Korean student, made a brief appearance at Auckland District Court today.

Judge Adams renewed Chung's bail on a 24-hour curfew to the address of the family which has hosted him since his arrival in New Zealand.

The court heard that Chung's lawyer Chris Wilkinson-Smith has withdrawn from the case, now being handled by David Jones, QC.

Mr Jones told the court he anticipated the case would be resolved at Chung's next pre-depositions hearing.

Chung, an international student, is accused of wounding Avondale College teacher Dave Warren, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The charge was laid after Mr Warren, who taught Japanese, was stabbed in the back on March 3, while writing on a whiteboard during a lesson.

Counsel for Chung previously admitted that he stabbed Mr Warren, but argued that he did not intend to cause grievous bodily harm and should face a less serious charge.
