Three die in Waikato crash

Three people have been killed in a crash between a car and truck in Waikato.

Northern communications shift commander Steve Smith said emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of Kakaramea Rd and Tuhikaramea Rd in Ngahinapouri, south of Hamilton about 5.30pm.

There have been three deaths, Mr Smith said.

A St John ambulance spokesman said one patient had been taken to Waikato Hospital with moderate injuries.

The crash has closed State Highway 39 (Kakaramea Rd) between Ngaruawahia and Pirongia.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said traffic was being diverted along Koromatua Rd, Tuhikaramea Rd, Gillard Rd and Ngahinapouri Rd.

The affected stretch of road is expected to remain closed for a number of hours and motorists have been advised to avoid the area if possible.
