Travellers warned about rabies in Bali

Travellers to Bali are warned to take care after the Indonesian government declared a rabies outbreak among dogs there.

Bali was previously considered to be free of rabies, a life-threatening infection generally spread through animal bites and scratches.

People planning to travel to Bali should seek advice about whether a rabies vaccination was needed, and once there, try to avoid bites from dogs and other animals, the Ministry of Health said.

Anyone bitten should thoroughly wash the wound with soap and water, and seek immediate medical attention.
