Three men have been killed after their car collided with the back of a truck and trailer in Levin before bursting into flames.
Police were called to the crash on Cambridge St at 12.20am today and later confirmed that three people had died.
The fire engulfed both vehicles. No one was in the truck at the time.
Police said they were working to confirm who the men were and the identification process would take some time.
It was not yet known what had caused the crash.
Police said the vehicle the men were in had been removed from the scene for further investigation and the coroner had been be notified.
Central fire communications shift manager Mike Wanoa said the crash was initially reported as a rescue so they sent two crews.
When it became evident there was a fire, they sent two more crews and put the fire out.
Residents reported hearing an explosion at the time of the collision.
