Wintry weekend blast forecast

Another wintry blast is headed for Otago this weekend, bringing snow to 200m and wind chill temperatures of minus-10degC.

A strong, very cold southerly is forecast to spread onto the southern South Island on Saturday night, according to MetService forecasters.

Snow showers are likely to 200m, and possibly lower, on Sunday morning, especially in eastern areas.

The snow will affect many roads, and near blizzard conditions are expected on exposed hills from the Catlins to Banks Peninsula.

Wind chill temperatures of about minus-10degC are likely in exposed places.

Weather conditions are expected to ease on Sunday night as winds drop and snow showers retreat to higher parts of the coastal hills and ranges, but road conditions will stay icy, especially in sheltered areas.

The southerly blast is expected to hit Wellington and Wairarapa on Sunday morning, resulting in snow showers to between 300m and 500m.
