Woman avoids injury after rock throwing incident

Police are investigating after a rock was thrown from an Auckland overbridge shattering the windscreen of a woman's car passing underneath.

Ana Leo was driving along the Southern Motorway when the rock smashed onto her Ford Territory bonnet at 10.30pm on Thursday, the New Zealand Herald reported.

In 2005 Christopher Currie was killed during a similar incident on the same road when an 8km boulder was thrown through his windscreen.

Fourteen-year-old Ngatai Reweti was jailed for nearly four years for manslaughter.

Mrs Leo was on her way home to Manurewa from Auckland Airport when the incident happened.

She drove home and contacted police.

Yesterday, her husband Semi Leo visited the scene and found shattered rocks along the road and orange traffic cones, which were also believed to have been thrown at Mrs Leo's car.

Mr Leo said he could "just picture" another tragedy if people continued the stupid acts.

A spokesman for the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) last night said the agency was relieved no one was hurt by the reckless action that had the potential to cause serious injury.

"The NZTA is working with police to try and apprehend those responsible."
