A woman has died and another is seriously injured after a two-car crash on a bridge near Eketahuna, in the Wairarapa, this morning.
Emergency services including headed to the smash, which closed State Highway 2 on the Anzac Bridge.
Two people were trapped in one of the crashed vehicles.
The driver of one of the vehicles escaped uninjured.
Police had also received a report of a 35km diesel spill on the road between Mt Bruce and Pahiatua.
Police advised drivers in the area to be careful and delay travel if possible.
The road was expected to be closed for at leats two hours and diversions were in place via Opaki Road and Morrisville.
Diversions were expected to be put in place but motorists in the area face long delays.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
