Young women rescued from Kaimais

Three young women have been rescued from the Kaimai Range by Tauranga police and search and rescue.

The women - aged 19, 20 and 21 - entered the ranges from the end of Whakamaramara Road at about 10.30 yesterday morning, intending to complete 4 hour round trip walk to Ngamuwahine and back.

Family members contacted police just before 5.30 yesterday evening after becoming concerned the women had not returned and could not be contacted by cell phone.

The women were found at 8.40pm by search and rescue volunteers not far from where the group had left their vehicle.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders of Tauranga Police said he had some concerns about how prepared the women had been for the walk.

'While the women did the right thing by outlining their intentions to family and friends they were not appropriately dressed for such a walk at this time of the year, nor did they have a map with them. Sturdy footwear and warm waterproof clothing is a must at this time of the year with such changeable weather.

"Fortunately these women were found not too long after they were reported missing and despite cool temperatures, showers and strong winds they were safe and well and in good spirits, much to the relief of their family and friends."
