Green MP has passport confiscated

Nov 11 - Green MP Jan Logie says she has had her passport confiscated by immigration officials in Sri Lanka.

Ms Logie is in Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Colombo, which starts on Friday.

Ms Logie also said the immigration officials shut down a media conference she was about to hold with Australian Green Party senator Leigh Rhiannon, Radio New Zealand reported.

She said she and Ms Rhiannon were about to hear from local people about allegations of human rights abuses.

When contacted, Ms Logie said she was not in a place where she could talk about the situation.

A Green Party spokesperson said Ms Logie was being detained at her hotel by Sri Lankan Immigration officials.

She was travelling with Ms Rhiannon, the senator for New South Wales, on a fact-finding trip to Sri Lanka in the lead up to CHOGM.

Their trip was scheduled to end today and had the aim of finding out first-hand about the human rights abuses that the Sri Lankan people are experiencing, the spokesperson said.

Four immigration officials shut down a meeting before the MPs' scheduled Sri Lankan press conference and took Ms Logie and Ms Rhiannon's passports, the spokesperson said.

They were still at the hotel waiting advice from the Australian High Commission before they gave statements.

Sri Lankan media were present.

The immigration officials had accused Ms Logie and Ms Rhiannon of violating the Immigration Act, the spokesperson said.
