Moeraki access 'less than ideal'

With the tourist season approaching, access to the "busy little village'' of Moeraki remains less than ideal, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher says.

Slipping in Haven St has moved east towards State Highway 1 and while the Waitaki District Council decided in June to focus its money and effort on Tenby St, the work required to address narrow sections of Tenby St - to allow greater access for larger vehicles - is not planned until July 1, 2018.

Depending on the vehicle drivers were in, Haven St remained the easier access route, he said.

``If you're towing a large boat, it may be the easiest way to get in and out at the moment, but not if you meet the same thing coming the other way. That's not an ideal situation,'' Mr Kircher said.

``We've got to sort out our plan for going forward. There may be some things we can do out of minor safety works - it's just different funds and how you've got to apply for them through NZTA [NZ Transport Agency]. We just have to see how we get on with those.

``If we needed to find the funding and we could get the co-funding, the subsidy from NZTA, we would find our bit even if it needed to be loan-funded. That wouldn't be a problem if there was a good agreement by the councillors.''

Tenby St was used as a detour after a section of Haven St collapsed and was closed after heavy rain in 2013.

In 2015, a partnership was formed between community members and the community rebuilt the road. The road was resealed, and reopened last year. Since then it has continued to slip and has reverted to gravel. Over winter the slumping on the road spread beyond the area that was closed and rebuilt.

Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said the council had not changed its ``current operating ethos'', which was to keep the road open as long as it was driveable.

The areas experiencing slipping now - which were outside the area that had received much attention in recent years - had also slumped in the past.

``It's been through a bit of a rough patch over the winter, for sure. We'll hopefully get a bit of a dry period and it will help stabilise it a bit and have it as good as we can get it for Christmas.''
