HDC complaints low

The Southern District Health Board has generated the lowest number of complaints to the Health and Disability Commissioner (HDC) for at least five years.

A report to this month's board meeting said that between July 1 and December 31 the HDC received 11 complaints generated from Southern DHB services.

This was the lowest level of complaints since the start of six-monthly reporting in 2006.

Four complaints related to hospital care, two to radiology, and one each in counselling/therapy, inpatient mental health service, multiple, specialist care, and surgery.

During the six-month period the commissioner closed 13 complaints related to Southern DHB, all using options other than investigation; three resulted in no further action, three were referred to the provider, six were referred to advocacy, and one was resolved by the parties.
