Preschoolers are being taught to "tuck up like a turtle" as part of a new earthquake safety campaign.

Civil Defence Minister John Carter today launched a new Turtle Safe DVD, a resource for preschools to teach children how to act in an earthquake.

The DVD's message is for children to protect themselves -- "just like a turtle tucked up in bed".

"It's really important that children know instinctively what to do," Mr Carter said.

"I encourage teachers and caregivers to watch the DVD and hold practice drills with the children in their care so they are familiar with what they should do when an earthquake occurs."

The DVD will be sent to more than 6000 early childcare centres and playgroups throughout the country from next week and will also be available online at www.getthru.govt.nz

Auckland Council's Civil Defence and Emergency Management manager Clive Manley said it was important for people of all ages to know how to respond in an emergency.

"Kids are a great way to get the message to the parents and the DVD is in a format that the little ones will understand and, hopefully, remember."
