Slow and wobbly is probably the best way to describe mediaeval jousting on rusty old bicycles.
It really doesn't sound that spectacular ... until someone gets hit with a 2m-long lance and falls off their bike.
It was particularly spectacular when Blueskin on Show entertainment organiser Mandy Mayhem, of Waitati, was knocked off her perch on Saturday by fellow jouster Ralph Lawrence, of Dunedin, and left her in a heap on the ground screaming: ''The handlebar's got me in the groin!''
While the self-professed Countess of Waitati assured the Otago Daily Times she had not received any major injuries, she was quick to remind Mr Lawrence that he nearly broke one of the rules.
''No killing is the number one rule,'' she said.
More than 1000 people attended the Blueskin A&P Society's annual show at Bland Park which included old-fashioned games such as sack races, tug-of-war and three-legged races; local club demonstrations; vegetable growing competitions; and a game of water soccer which involved squirting a large football around the field with a fire hose.
Fine weather helped the event's success, and the ''Countess'' was delighted with the turnout.
