Barrister appointed to role

The Ministry of Education has appointed Ben Nettleton as limited statutory manager of Garston School, with the support of the board of trustees.

The limited statutory manager will assume powers and duties of the board, as an employer, communications, and policies and procedures.

According to an education ministry statement, Mr Nettleton is a practising barrister who specialises in commercial and corporate advisory, employment, and alternative dispute resolution.

In his role as limited statutory manager, he will work to support the overall functioning of the school, and day-to-day operations of Garston School remain unaffected by this appointment.

Garston School in Northern Southland provides education for pupils from years 1 to 8. It is a small school with multi-level classes.

Earlier this year, it received a letter from the Ministry of Education saying it was being treated as a ‘‘going concern’’, based on its 2021 financial statements.
