Multisport: Moreton first in rail trail duathlon

Lee Moreton won the individual men's division in the Otago Central Rail Trail Duathlon at the weekend.

Moreton won in 6hr 5min, nearly 20 minutes in front of Gavin Mason.

In the individual women's section, Kath Kelly won in 6hr 59min, with Victoria Beck second.

It was the 10th anniversary of the event, which runs for 150km from Clyde to Middlemarch.

The first day consisted of four legs, from Clyde to Ranfurly, with competitors alternating between running and cycling at the designated changeover points in Alexandra, Lauder and Auripo.

On the second day, four legs were again contested with changeovers at Waipiata, Hyde and Moynihans Lane, again alternating between running and cycling.

The most gruelling leg was undoubtedly the last leg on the first day, from Auripo to Ranfurly, where competitors had to cycle the final 37km over the highest point of the trail between the Idaburn Dam and Wedderburn, capping it off with a 200m sprint to the finish in Ranfurly.

The team titles went to Jeff Notman and Campbell Garry (men) and Tania Burden and Clare Challis (women).

Race controller Graeme Duncan said the race was contested in high spirits and in perfect weather for the tough two-day event.
