About 120 hunters from as far away as Ashburton and Dunedin took part, with many of the pigs shot in favourable weather on Saturday - there was snow falling on the higher hunting blocks yesterday.
James Turangi and Jese Anderson, of Ashburton, turned up with their 77kg pig about 10 minutes before the weigh-in deadline.
The barrow, or castrated boar, had been tracked by dogs and shot in Mid Canterbury, although the two did not want to give the game away regarding the location of their secret hunting spot.
Pat Winders, of Oamaru, was more forthcoming, revealing he shot his second-placed 75kg boar in the snow at Otematata Station on Saturday.
He said the area was one of his favourite hunting grounds.
The third-heaviest pig weighed was a 74kg boar brought in by Glenn Ralston, of Ashburton.
About 40 pigs in total were weighed in at the Maheno Tavern in the annual hunting competition, organised by the North Otago Deerstalkers' Association.
All pigs were tested for Tb.
One of the competition organisers, Steven Hanson, said reasonable weather on Friday afternoon and Saturday had helped make the competition a success.
"We were thankful for that, because we knew today was going to be awful," he said.
