A motorcyclist has been seriously hurt in a crash with a car in Oamaru.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near the intersection of Wansbeck  St (State Highway 1) and Awamoa Rd, just before 2pm on Sunday. 

In a statement, police said the motorcyclist had sustained serious injuries.

The southbound lane of SH1/Wansbeck St is closed near the intersection, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says, and a detour is in place.
