The official population of the critically endangered kākāpō has reached a recovery-era high of 325 birds, the Department of Conservation says.

Ninety chicks from this year’s breeding season were officially added to the population last Tuesday.

There are three breeding populations of the flightless parrot: Codfish Island near Rakiura/Stewart Island, and Fiordland’s Anchor Island and Chalky Island.
