A $2.5 million upgrade of Central Otago's state highway network is nearing completion, with more than 50km of road works around the district recently resealed.
New Zealand Transport Agency Central Otago area engineer John Jarvis said the reseal programme extended across the roading network, from Raes Junction in the east, through to Kingston, and the Gates of Haast bridge, near the West Coast, and up to the Lindis Pass.
The first stage of the upgrade was almost completed, "ahead of schedule", and further resealing works would be carried out in the New Year, he said.
Seal upgrades and maintenance checks on bridges, located near Luggate, in the Upper Clutha, and the Gates of Haast bridge, near Makarora, were part of the NZTA's "safety retrofit" programme.
Several stretches of State Highway 6 near Lake Hayes and Queenstown received special attention under the safety retrofit and roadmarking scheme.
About $500,000 worth of road barriers would also be installed along a stretch of SH6, known as "the neck", above Lake Wanaka, in the New Year, Mr Jarvis said.
