Bike Week numbers hit by weather

Lower numbers than normal because of poor weather hit the annual Bannockburn-based Bike Week but motorcyclists who attended still got out on the region's roads and enjoyed themselves.

The motorcycle rally, which began last Sunday, had about 60 participants but fewer on-the-day riders turned out, which organiser Dave Moreton attributed to some of the worst February weather he had seen in several years.

''We can cope with that. People still went riding ... [I'm] very happy with how it went. We had good entertainment and the guest speakers were great.''

Even as participants were leaving the event, they were discussing returning for the fifth Bike Week next year, Mr Moreton said.

The event concluded in time for riders to head to Galloway, near Alexandra, to take part in the 31st Vincent County Rally, which began last night.

The two-night motorcycle rally has been running since 1985, and last year attracted about 1350 bikers.
