Brass bands have a shining future in Otago and Southland if the musicians taking part in the regional contest at the weekend are any indication.

Otago Southland Brass Bands Association president Chris Herman, of Invercargill, said the number of young musicians was a good sign for the future.

"There's a lot of young blood there and that's what we like to see, because it keeps these bands going," he said.

Six bands competed in the Otago and Southland provincial contest, which was held in Roxburgh during the weekend. Mosgiel Brass, Roxburgh Pioneer Generation Brass, Ascot Park Hotel Auxiliary Brass, Kaikorai Metropolitan Brass, St Kilda Brass and Ascot Park Hotel Brass vied for top honours in sacred, selection and entertainment categories.

Band members also competed as soloists, in duets and ensembles as part of the two-day competition.

"It's been a very successful weekend and we've had great community support and sponsorship from Roxburgh, " Mr Herman said.
