Bump to go; options mulled

Clyde's only speed bump is to be removed after residents raised issues with the location, design and lack of consultation.

The speed bump, at the northern end of Sunderland St, had been in place since December last year in an effort to reduce motorists' speed in the commercial area of Clyde, the section of Sunderland St between Holloway and Naylor Sts.

While it had the desired effect, neighbouring residents were dissatisfied about the visual nature and the noise created by vehicles.

In April, the Vincent Community Board apologised to residents and recommended the Central Otago District Council's roading committee sign off on removal of the bump.

The committee considered a report from council roading manager Julie Muir this week, which proposed concrete kerb protrusions to narrow Sunderland St and a section of differently coloured or textured road.

The second stage proposed minor changes to the kerb alignment on Naylor St and installation of 30kmh speed signs. The signs, and accompanying bylaw, could not proceed until a traffic-calming structure was constructed.

At least one Sunderland St property owner would not be happy with anything outside their residence, council roading engineer Peter Cuthbertson said.

Mr Lepper suggested, for that reason, traffic-calming measures be placed further out of town and removable planter boxes be considered as a cheaper option that could be easily removed if they did not work.

The roading committee approved the community board's request to remove the bump and recommended the temporary measures be placed before Miners Lane and on Sunderland St. The temporary measures will also need to be signed off by the Vincent Community Board.
