A spate of burglaries in Twizel is worrying the town's police, who fear there may be more yet to be reported.
Six burglaries of unoccupied holiday homes have been reported since August 12, although Senior Constable Les Andrew believed they might been carried out from the beginning of the month.
They have been discovered by owners visiting their holiday homes or by neighbours and permanent residents asked to keep an eye on them.
Const Andrew said yesterday he had been unable to yet contact all the owners of the homes broken into - three in Tekapo Dr and one each in Godley, Sefton and Sealy Sts.
Three of the burglaries were reported at the weekend by owners who visited their holiday homes. Const Andrew believed the burglaries had been carried out by locals who knew the unoccupied homes.
So far, only alcohol, food and toiletries had been taken. Other homes had been searched, for alcohol, he suspected. Appliances and other items, including flat screen televisions, had been left.
He was worried there might be other burglaries yet to be reported.
"Many [holiday home] owners don't come back until Labour Weekend, for the first time," he said.
He wanted owners to check their holiday homes or get someone in Twizel to do so, and residents to report any information or suspicious behaviour.
