It was 60 years since the Catholic church building was blessed and opened, and 60 years since long-serving priest Fr Mervyn McGettigan was ordained in the same church.
The Church of St John the Baptist opened on July 27, 1958, and Fr McGettigan was ordained in the church two days later.
Fr McGettigan (84), who grew up in Alexandra, gave decades of service at parishes around Otago and Southland.
Now retired, in Mosgiel, he said yesterday’s celebrations made for an "emotional" day that was "wonderful, on reflection", and he gave thanks to those who had walked alongside him over the years.
"It’s been a wonderful journey, because it has been filled with a lot of wonderful people who have supported me and the parish over the years."
He was the principal celebrant in yesterday’s church Mass at the Catholic church, and was then further honoured at a morning tea celebration.
St Gerard’s School principal Trina Eastwood said it was a "very special celebration, for someone who has given his life and love to our parish and others".
Parishioner Liz Anderson said Fr McGettigan had served with dedication and compassion, and had "been loyal and grounded and never forgotten his roots".
