Thousands attended the first of two Central Otago Racing Club meetings at the Omakau racecourse yesterday, part of Gallop South's summer series of racing.

Punters set up top viewing positions from midday before the later-than-usual racing started at 2.30pm.

Cloud cover kept temperatures bearable.

Omakau horse trainer Murray Hamilton said the local track was consistently in good form and made for excellent racing.

Regular irrigation and never-ending voluntary support kept the track in top shape, he said.

"Some of the best-regarded jockeys have said it's the best surface they've raced on as part of the Christmas circuit," Mr Hamilton said.

He had four horses racing yesterday, and said they had a "fair" chance of winning.

"There's not really any such thing as a local or home advantage. It's just the best horse on the day. It is really great to train on this track, though," he said.

Racing finished about 7.30pm and there was plenty of entertainment between each of the nine main races.

A fishing contest was one of the stranger attractions, among other more traditional entertainments including live music, children's games, pony rides, a chocolate wheel, food and crafts stalls, and a miniature olympics event.
