Extra ward councillor for next election approved

Central Otago's Cromwell ward will gain an extra councillor at the next local body election after a change to ward representation was signed off by the Central Otago District Council.

Councillors yesterday approved the changes decided through a representation review, and the policy will take effect immediately and apply for the 2019 election.

It will increase the number of Cromwell councillors from three to four, prompted by population growth in the Cromwell district.

It will also amalgamate the Alexandra and Earnscleugh-Manuherikia council wards into a new Vincent ward, and the number of Vincent Community Board members will drop from five to four, in line with the numbers on Central Otago's other community boards.

The representation review is required every six years by law.
