For Millers Flat man Alistair Moore, taking a photo of his late father to Anzac services is a sign of respect.

''He used to take me to all the dawn parades in Dunedin when I was a little boy. Now I'm bringing him with me.''

Mr Moore sen served in Egypt, Italy and Crete during World War 2 and died in 1972.

Mr Moore said he treasured the memories of attending Anzac services with his father.

''He never missed a parade. He used to go to two of them every year, the dawn parade in Dunedin and then the service in Macandrew Bay, where we lived.''

Several years ago, Mr Moore noticed in television coverage of North Island Anzac services that some family members were taking photos of returned servicemen with them.

''I thought that was pretty special,'' and since then he has taken a photo of his father in his army uniform to the Anzac services he attends.

His father, who served with the 27th Machine Gun Battalion, did not like to talk about the war, and the snippets he did reveal were too sad to repeat, Mr Moore said.

He said he would keep honouring his father and all those who did wartime service by attending Anzac services.
