Hunters turned out in force at the weekend for a young lad called Hunter.

Proceeds from the third Roxburgh and Districts Lions Club hunting competition, held over the weekend, will go to 22-month-old Hunter Moore.

Hunter, who lives in New South Wales, was born with a congenital heart disease and had open heart surgery earlier this year.

His parents, Hayden Moore and Kylene Barbara, used to live in Roxburgh, and his grandparents are Garry and Piki Moore, of Roxburgh.

Competition organiser James Hill was pleased with the success of the three-day event, despite rough weather much of the weekend.

"We're really happy with how it's gone and how well supported it was, although the weather hasn't been ideal for hunting, with strong winds one day and sleet and snow the next.''

Children had to produce a bag containing a rabbit, a hare and a fish and the fish were certainly difficult to land, Mr Hill said.

The event attracted 14 teams from all over Otago and 30 children entered the junior class.

The proceeds were still being counted yesterday, with raffle money still to be included, so a final sum was yet to be tallied.

The competition received "terrific'' sponsorship.

Hunter's grandmother said her grandson was doing well.

"He's so full of energy now, since the operation. Before, he could only run around for five minutes or so before he got tired out.''

The family appreciated the support from Teviot Valley residents - "it's been great'', she said.
