The 18th anniversary of the Otago Central Rail Trail opening was celebrated  this year with the Rail Trail Duathlon over the weekend.

About 240 people competed in the duathlon along the cycle trail from Clyde to Middlemarch.

The event has been held on the third weekend of February every year since 2000, when the cycle trail was opened.

Race controller Graeme Duncan said the event attracted people from all over the South Island, including Fiordland College, who had attended the duathlon every year since its inception.

Competitors chose to compete in the duathlon as teams or individuals, running and cycling the 150km long trail.

A mountain bike category was added to the event a few years ago so competitors could bike the entire trail if desired.

The race began in Clyde at 9.30am on Saturday,  stopped in Ranfurly on Saturday night and finished in Middlemarch yesterday.

Mr Duncan said competitor numbers were down this year — at the duathlon’s peak in 2008 there were 650.

He said this could have been because of  other events  being held at the same time.

There had been good weather on Saturday  but  gale-force winds yesterday. The wind helped speed up the cyclists, he said.

There were no accidents or incidents during the event.

It was run by the combined Central Otago Lions Clubs.

Any profit from the event went towards trail maintenance or to Lions clubs in the district. There were 19 categories. The winners of the individual two-day duathlon were Tiaan McKinnel for the men and Ginny Wilson for the women.
